Dungeons in WoW Forever: grouping the old way

Quick answer
Grouping in Forever is manual: ask in chat, invite people questing nearby, and travel to the dungeon together. Agree on who tanks, heals and pulls, mark the dangerous enemies, and talk about loot before the first boss. The friends you make this way often last the whole journey.
Key takeaways
- No automatic dungeon finder: you build your own group.
- A tank, a healer and three damage dealers is the classic five.
- Mark targets, pull carefully, use crowd control.
- Agree on loot before you start.
How do I find a group without a dungeon finder?
Ask in your zone or city chat channel which dungeon you want and which role you play. Invite people you meet doing the same quests; dungeon quests are often picked up nearby. Then travel to the entrance together.
Being friendly, patient and clear goes a long way. Add good players to your friends list; they become the core of your future groups.
Who does what in a dungeon group?
A classic group has five players.
- Tank: pulls enemies, holds their attention and sets the pace.
- Healer: keeps everyone alive and watches mana; give them time to drink.
- Damage: defeats enemies, ideally the marked ones first, without pulling them off the tank.
- Crowd control: mages, rogues, hunters, warlocks and others can keep an extra enemy out of the fight.
Tip: Marking a skull on the first target and a moon on the one to crowd-control keeps everyone on the same page. Our Macro Workshop has a one-key skull macro.
How should loot work?
Agree before the first boss. A common rule is “need” only for an upgrade your character will use now, and “greed” otherwise. If unsure, ask; a polite question is always better than an awkward roll.
How do I avoid pulling too much?
Let the tank start each fight, and wait a moment so they can grab every enemy’s attention before you hit hard. Stay behind the group when walking, because many enemies wander, and running past a patrol can bring it into the fight.
If something goes wrong, the healer’s mana decides whether the group survives. Use your defensive abilities, focus the marked target, and don’t run away from the group with enemies chasing you.
Tip: Unsure what to do? Ask. Classic dungeons reward groups that talk to each other.
Which dungeons fit my level?
These are Classic’s dungeons and their usual levels. Forever adds nine new dungeons between levels 13 and 60, such as the Hall of Thanes (13–18); we’ll add the rest as they’re revealed.
- 13–24: Ragefire Chasm (Horde), Wailing Caverns, the Deadmines (Alliance).
- 22–32: Shadowfang Keep, Blackfathom Deeps, the Stockade (Alliance).
- 28–45: Gnomeregan, Razorfen Kraul, the Scarlet Monastery.
- 40–55: Razorfen Downs, Uldaman, Zul’Farrak, Maraudon.
- 50–60: Sunken Temple, Blackrock Depths, Blackrock Spire, Dire Maul, Scholomance, Stratholme.
When do raids open?
Forever’s raids unlock on December 9: Barrow Deeps for 10 players, Hyjal Summit for 20, and Onyxia’s Lair for 40.
Frequently asked questions
Does WoW Forever have a dungeon finder?
Grouping is manual, the Classic way: you find players in chat or out in the world and travel to the dungeon together.
What level should I be for my first dungeon?
Around 13 to 18 for the first ones, like Ragefire Chasm, Wailing Caverns, the Deadmines or Forever’s new Hall of Thanes.
Do I need to be a tank or healer to find a group?
No, but groups form faster around them, so damage dealers often help by asking a tank or healer they’ve met while questing.
